This project aims to establish an integrated transboundary research platform for Asian coastal countries to address the compounded threat of microplastic pollution amplified by climate change, within a One Health framework. Focusing on the synergistic interactions between microplastics, extreme oceanic dynamics and climate stressors, it seeks to fill critical knowledge gaps by exploring the effects of microplastic pollution on ecosystem stability and public health. Employing advanced techniques such as artificial intelligence, biotechnological approaches, ecological modelling, toxicological assessments, and risk evaluation frameworks, this project will provide scientific evidence and a database for sustainable regional development. It strengthens regional collaboration by establishing shared protocols for monitoring climate-microplastic interactions, informed by APN’s success in fostering Asian climate research communities. It will deliver actionable insights for governance frameworks, regional microplastic pollution control, and sustainable development for Asian coastal countries.
