Strengthening institutional capacity and farmer adoption of protective practices for climate-resilient pest management in South Asian rice farming

This project addresses the intersection of climate-driven pest pressures and pesticide-related health and economic risks in rice-growing regions of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Changing climate patterns are intensifying pest outbreaks, increasing agrochemical use, and posing serious challenges for farming communities. Baseline surveys of 336 farmers across six districts of the consortium countries will assess current practices and exposure risks to guide interventions. A multi-level capacity development approach will integrate eco-friendly pest management and personal protective equipment (PPE) promotion into institutional frameworks. Activities include co-developing gender-responsive training modules with 15 Training and Research Unit (TARU) personnel, building the advisory capacity of 30 Agricultural Research and Advisory Department (ARAD) officers, and conducting awareness programs for 120 farmers, including women and marginalised groups. Three national consultation workshops (one in each country) will engage policymakers to translate findings into actionable briefs and frameworks. Outcomes include updated curricula, strengthened institutional capacity, improved farmer knowledge, and evidence-based recommendations supporting policy integration. This cross-country initiative offers scalable insights for South and Southeast Asia, aligning with APN’s priorities on climate resilience, inclusive capacity building, and science-policy engagement.
