Transdisciplinarity is increasingly recognised as a crucial approach for addressing complex sustainability challenges, particularly in developing countries, where solutions must integrate diverse knowledge systems, societal needs, and scientific insights. Funding agencies such as APN, research institutions, universities, and administrative bodies acknowledge its potential to foster cooperation, co-creation of knowledge, and collaborative solutions. However, superficial applications of transdisciplinarity often align only with funding requirements or policy mandates, limiting its transformative impact on sustainable development. Many traditionally trained academics lack collaboration skills, requiring capacity-building in knowledge integration, boundary spanning, facilitation, reflexivity, adaptability, and shared communication. This project seeks to address this gap by designing and implementing a comprehensive “training-of-trainers” program to enhance transdisciplinary capacity. Trainers are expected to develop and implement training programs in their respective sub-regions and countries, amplifying the reach of the project. Case studies and thematic content used in the training will include priority topics identified by APN’s subregional committees: e.g. water and food security in South Asia, SDGs in the face of a changing climate in Southeast Asia, climate resilience and adaptation in Temperate East Asia, biodiversity and conservation for human well-being in the Pacific.
