Research-based Capacity Building for Advancing Urban Nature governance in China for climate resilience and ecosystem restoration (CaBUNA)

This project is designed to develop research-based capacity-building modules aimed at improving the implementation and governance of urban nature-based solutions (NbS) in China, thereby enhancing climate resilience and facilitating ecosystem restoration. Through case studies in Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, it will systematically identify factors of successful practices, pivotal interventions, and prevailing challenges in the governance of urban nature. Leveraging comparative insights from urban Indonesia and Europe, our analysis will reveal transferable knowledge from each case study, evaluate opportunities for impactful advancements, and pinpoint locations for establishing “urban living labs” to test and refine governance innovations. With these insights, customized capacity-building modules will be devised and deployed to equip policymakers, the private sector, civil society leaders, and citizens with the tools and knowledge needed to launch and maintain NbS projects in urban China. This collaborative effort merges applied research with urban living labs to foster knowledge co-creation among diverse stakeholders, advancing capacity building, raising awareness, and enhancing science-policy integration. This initiative is in line with the APN’s goals and global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity framework.
