Md. Giashuddin Miah holds the position of Professor of the Department of Agroforestry and Environment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), a public university in Bangladesh. He served as a Vice-Chancellor of his university (BSMRAU) for two consecutive tenures starting in June 2017. Prof Miah made a commendable contribution to the University by improving its academics, research and reputation nationally and internationally by acquiring the top position among the Bangladeshi Universities in international rankings, including Times Higher Ranking. This university stood first for three consecutive years in the Annual Performance Agreement (APA) evaluated by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. He did his PhD from the Philippines in 1993. He was a JICA fellow twice for pursuing Post-doctoral Research in Japan (Kyushu University and National Institute of Agro-Environmental Sciences). Prof Giashuddin has twice enjoyed a Commonwealth Scholarship for post-doctoral research in Canada (Laval University) and the United Kingdom (Nottingham University). He started his professional career in 1984 and was promoted to Professor in 2000. He is a skilled academician and researcher with 40 years of experience in agroforestry, resource use and environment, especially climate change. Prof. Giashuddin is the pioneer for institutionalising agroforestry and environmental research and education in Bangladesh and subsequently established an academic Department by the name of “Agroforestry and Environment” in 1996 at the BSMRAU, the first, foremost and leading department in this discipline in Bangladesh. He has supervised 130 MS and 31 PhD students.
Prof. Miah has successfully implemented many international projects funded by APN, EU, FAO, ICRAF, UNESCO, USDA, World Bank, etc., in collaboration with national and international partners and a series of national projects. He wrote two books (in Bengali) and several chapters of books. He also published 135 research articles in national and international reputed journals. He is an active member of more than 25 national and international professional bodies and on the editorial boards of three reputed journals. He has held many important positions in his renowned University as Dean of the Graduate Programme, Treasurer (appointed by the Honorable President of the country for four years), Syndicate member, Selection boards, Academic Council, Planning Committee etc. He served as a member of the Syndicate for three years at the Sylhet Agricultural University and Khulna Agricultural University and is currently a Syndicate member of the Pabna Science and Technology University. He has been serving on selection committees of several public Universities in Bangladesh. Since 2005, Prof. Miah has represented Bangladesh in the APN as a Scientific Planning Group (SPG) member. He assisted in expanding ICRAF’s (World Agroforestry Centre) South Asia mission in Bangladesh since its inception by providing liaison and other support and serving as its first liaison scientist for Bangladesh. Prof. Miah attended over 90 international events in various countries across the world. He received “Amor Ekushey Sriti Padok 2016” from the Bangladesh Education Observation Society.
