Against this background, this special issue highlights the need to integrate the concepts of the smart city and resilience and advances our understanding of the actual and/or potential contributions of smart solutions and technologies to urban resilience. Since both resilience and smartness are transdisciplinary concepts, this special issue brings together ideas and researchers from across different disciplines. It demonstrates that both adaptation and mitigation measures and interventions are necessary for improving resilience, and smart solutions are capable of facilitating such interventions. A synthesis of the papers included in this special issue is provided in the following section.
