Impact of Climate Change on Slum Dwellers of Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Impact of Climate Change on Slum Dwellers of Bhubaneswar, Odisha examines how extreme climatic events such as floods, cyclones, heatwaves, and waterlogging affect the livelihoods, health, housing, and adaptive capacities of slum communities in Bhubaneswar. Based on qualitative and quantitative research conducted with 150 households across six slums, the study identifies economic insecurity, poor housing, limited education, inadequate infrastructure, and low awareness of government support schemes as key drivers of vulnerability. The report highlights how climate change intensifies existing social inequalities, particularly for wage labourers and informal workers living in low-lying and environmentally hazardous settlements. Findings show that families often incur debt for healthcare, house repairs, and daily consumption following climate-related disasters. The study recommends accelerated implementation of housing schemes, improved drainage and sanitation infrastructure, increased awareness of compensation mechanisms, and participatory, slum-specific policy interventions to strengthen resilience and reduce climate vulnerability among urban poor communities in Odisha.
