The National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) in the Pacific region have the task of observing and understanding weather and climate in the region and in providing related services in support of the respective national needs. Recently, most of the NHMSs are expanding their services to ocean related observations including wave forecasts, ocean temperature and sea level monitoring, etc. Therefore there is a need to increase the capacity in the area of physical oceanography for NMHS staff who have been trained on the meteorology of the region and on weather forecasting. Additionally, most NMHS staff would like to further their education and upskill their qualification using the knowledge they have acquired over many years serving as a weather forecaster or meteorologist. Thus, there is a need to improve the technical and quantitative skills to analyse data that they have collected over several years. This proposal aims to build capacity in the region by firstly, educating the existing NMHS staff in the Pacific Islands region on the physical oceanography of the region, and secondly, to provide training opportunities to build their quantitative analysis skills, for example, on the use of high-level programming languages, such as Python, so that they can analyse the data they have collected for their respective countries. Effective ways of communicating the scientific information generated to the general public will also be highlighted.
