Prof. Kanniah is a key member of the Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security at UTM and the TropicalMap research group. Her expertise is in remote sensing data analysis and modeling for environmental applications covering land use and land cover changes, vegetation processes and estimation of particulate matters and their impact on climate, vegetation process (carbon uptake) and human health.She has received various research grants locally and internationally to conduct researches in the above-mentioned fields. Dr. Kanniah is a fellow of the Malaysia Academy of Sciences and a senior member of IEEE. She serves as associate editor for the International Journal of Remote Sensing (Q2 journal), editor in chief of Advanced Geospatial Science and Technology journal published by UTM and sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Geoinformatics (IJG). Recognized globally, she has received numerous awards, including being named one of the world’s top 2% scientists for three consecutive years (2020, 2021, and 2022) and receiving the Global Scholar Programme award at the University of Dundee, UK in 2022, Tsinghua University, China, in 2019 and an International Visiting Scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) under the MIT-UTM Malaysia Sustainable Cities Program for the academic year 2016-2017.
