Frédéric Vitart is leading the Extended-Range Team of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). His research activities focus on sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction, tropical cyclone prediction, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, tropical-extratropical interactions and forecast verification. He received a Ph.D degree from the Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Princeton University in 1999. He has been at ECMWF since 1998 where he coordinated the implementation of the monthly forecasting system, which became operational in 2004. He is Co-chair of the WWRP/WCRP sub-seasonal-to-seasonal Prediction (S2S) project and former members of the WGNE MJO-Task Force. He has co-edited the book “Sub-seasonal to Seasonal prediction: the gap between weather and climate forecasting” (Elsevier).
