This month, the APN’s L. B. Brown Memorial Photo Contest takes the theme of “Local Knowledge for Global Resilience”, and we invite you to submit photos that tell stories, through your own lens, of how traditional, indigenous and local knowledge helps local communities prepare better for reducing risks, coping with natural disasters and increasing resilience.
Photo Contest Background
The United Nations in 2009 designated 13 October as International Day for Disaster Reduction to raise awareness of actions at all levels towards reducing the risks of natural disasters such as droughts, heat waves, storms and floods. Their impacts are exacerbated as their intensity and frequency increases over the recent decades which may possibly be contributed by global warming. Further, increasing uncertainties of slow-onset events present a tougher challenge to nations in designing strategies for disaster resilience to cope with the negative impacts that they might exert.
The focus of the International Day for Disaster Reduction 2015 is on the traditional, indigenous and local knowledge which complement modern science in enhancing the resilience of individuals and societies. To contribute to and compliment the celebration of knowledge for disaster resilience, APN invites photography enthusiasts from the Asia-Pacific region to submit their photos under the theme “Local Knowledge for Global Resilience”. Examples of eligible entries include, but are not limited to photos that depict the following:
- Traditional, indigenous and local practices that increase disaster preparedness and reduce impacts of droughts, floods, typhoons, loss of biodiversity, etc.
- Activities combining traditional, indigenous and local knowledge with scientific information to increase preparedness and resilience to disasters, and efforts to scale up the use of such combined knowledge.
- Activities to impart, preserve, or disseminate such traditional, indigenous and local knowledge between different groups of people.
Who Can Submit?
Amateur photographers, media practitioners and professional photographers are all welcome to submit entries.
APN project leaders and collaborators are especially encouraged to submit entries that are related to their project activities.
How to Submit?
- Register an account at: http://friends.apn-gcr.org.
- Go to Forum, and visit: Louis Brown Memorial Photo Contest 2015 > Call for Entries (October): Local Knowledge for Global Resilience
- Submit your photos (up to two entries per participant) by posting a reply under the master thread.
- Submit your photo entries, following the procedure above, on or before 31 October 2015.
Eligibility
- The competition is open to all nationals of APN member countries.
- Photographs must be originally taken by the entrant and must not have been submitted under any other photo contests nor published on any publications.
- Each photograph must be between 3mb and 6mb in size.
- Each photograph must be accompanied by a caption, which should include a description of the photo, the name of the photographer, and the date and place taken.
Selection Process
Submitted entries will be assessed based on relevance to the theme, composition, creativity and technical matters (including captions). Two sets of evaluation will be considered:
- Evaluation by a panel of judges;
- Highest number of Likes on the APN Facebook page. Eligible photo entries will be collated in a folder and posted in APN Facebook page. A period of time will be allotted for audience voting (“liking”).
Prizes
- A medal and a certificate in recognition of the awardee of the “L.B. Brown Memorial Award”.
- Monthly winners will receive a small token from the APN, and a grand winner of the L. B. Brown Memorial Award will be selected at the 21st IGM/SPG Meeting to be held in early 2016.
