The UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RCC Asia-Pacific) and the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) are organizing a regional webinar to explore how ocean-related research can better inform climate policy, planning and implementation across Asia and the Pacific.
Background
The ocean plays a fundamental role in regulating the global climate, absorbing a significant share of human-induced carbon dioxide emissions and most of the excess heat generated by global warming. It also supports livelihoods, food security and local economies throughout Asia and the Pacific.
At the same time, rising ocean temperatures, marine heatwaves, sea level rise and ocean acidification are placing marine ecosystems, coastal communities and low-lying nations under increasing pressure. Addressing these interconnected challenges requires closer collaboration among governments, policymakers, researchers, academic institutions, practitioners and implementing partners.
Political attention to the ocean–climate nexus continues to grow. Ocean resilience features prominently in the COP31 Action Agenda, while the 2026 Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue highlighted ocean-related priorities in nationally determined contributions, means of implementation and synergies across climate, ocean and biodiversity action.
The region already has a substantial body of ocean and coastal research that can support adaptation and resilience. However, stronger connections are needed to ensure that scientific knowledge is translated into practical policies, programmes and actions.
This webinar will provide a space to showcase research from Asia and the Pacific and discuss how scientific evidence can be more effectively integrated into climate planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Objectives
The webinar aims to promote research- and evidence-based climate action, with a particular focus on ocean adaptation and resilience. It will:
- Showcase two examples of ocean and climate research from Asia and the Pacific relevant to adaptation and resilience planning;
- Facilitate dialogue among governments, researchers, academic institutions and practitioners on strengthening the use of evidence throughout the policy and implementation cycle; and
- Share reflections and good practices relevant to national adaptation plan processes and international discussions on ocean and climate change ahead of COP31.

- UNFCCC national focal points and government technical representatives;
- Researchers and academic institutions;
- Development and regional partners; and
- Climate adaptation and resilience practitioners from across Asia and the Pacific.
Expected outcomes
The webinar is expected to:
- Increase the visibility of ocean-related research from Asia and the Pacific that can inform adaptation and resilience planning;
- Identify opportunities for stronger collaboration among researchers, governments and practitioners; and
- Generate key messages to support national planning and international discussions on ocean and climate change ahead of COP31.
