On 13 October 2023, the project team for “Establishing a pilot network for microplastic monitoring and analysis in the coastal environment of Southeast Asia” launched their research by presenting their plan to the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) Collaborative Regional Research Programme (CRRP) Award.

Supported by a USD 25,000 grant for a two-year period, this project evaluates the current status of microplastic monitoring and analysis across coastal environments in Southeast Asian countries, with a particular focus on Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam. A key objective is to develop a uniform methodology for sampling microplastics in air and surface seawater. In addition, the project establishes a pilot network of researchers to foster knowledge sharing and capacity building.

During the kickoff presentation, the team outlined their project timelines, defined roles and responsibilities, and presented detailed action plans to ensure effective implementation.
