Current situation and demand for capacity building of agricultural extension workers in Thai Nguyen province under the context of climate change

This study was conducted to evaluate the current capacity, challenges and capacity building demand of agricultural extension workers in Thai Nguyen province under the context of climate change. The research was conducted during 2021 – 2022 using semi-structured questionnaires with 75 leaders and staff members of agricultural extension agencies in the province. Results showed that most of the workers hold university degrees in agricultural majors. The majority of them were under 35 years old and had more than 5 years of professional experience. Main challenges they encountered due to climate change include difficulties in developing production plans, traveling for farm visits and other extension activities, pests and diseases forecast and management, and transfer of new technology. Most agricultural extension staff have been trained with agricultural extension methods. Nonetheless, only a small proportion of staff have been trained or have experience in climate change adaptation. Technical manuals for climate-resilient production, information sharing networks among agricultural extension officers, and effective agricultural extension communication methods are the main learning resources that the agricultural extension workers want to be equipped to effectively carry out their professional tasks under the context of climate change.
