Rajiv Sinha

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Professor Rajiv Sinha obtained his Master’s degree in Applied Geology from IIT Roorkee (then University of Roorkee) in 1987 and later obtained his PhD in fluvial sedimentology from the University of Cambridge, UK. He joined IIT Kanpur in June 1994. He carried out his post-doctoral research at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. Professor Rajiv Sinha is one of the leading earth scientists from India who specializes in earth surface processes and river science. His primary area of research has been the Himalayan river systems with an emphasis on river morphology, hydrology, sediment dynamics and flood risk assessment. He was the Founder Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Kanpur. He led the fluvial geomorphology group of the Ganga River Basin Environmental Management Plan (GRBMP) – a large consortium of 7 IITs constituted for preparing a comprehensive plan for river ecosystem management. Some of his noted works on flood risk assessment and river dynamics of north Bihar rivers are now being used for developing river management strategies by the government of Bihar. He has recently developed the sediment management policy for the north Bihar rivers for the DFID-supported initiative under climate proofing of Bihar rivers coordinated by MOEFCC, Government of Bihar. Professor Sinha has published more than 200 papers with over 7000 citations (h-index 49). He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2000), National Mineral Award (2002), and S S Merh Award (2006). Professor Sinha has been a member of the editorial board of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms (Wiley), Journal of Sedimentary Research (SEPM), Quaternary International (Elsevier), and Current Science (Bangalore). He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
