About the seminar
The PaCE-SD Seminar Series is a weekly feature at the university during the semester. The seminars promote scientific research and dialogue and provide a platform for graduate students, local and visiting scientists and professionals to share their research and ideas with an audience of people from various backgrounds. The seminar series extends beyond the university community and features speakers from regional development agencies, government and non-governmental organisations and communities.
The seminar, titled “Innovation, small journey around an evoluting concept,” will be held on 30 August 2024 (11:00 to 12:00 FJT or 8:00 to 9:00 JST) at the MSP Lecture Theatre, the University of the South Pacific (USP) Lower Campus, Suva, Fiji. In this seminar, the evolving concept of innovation will be discussed. In the first part, innovation shall be explored through six questions: What, when, how, why, where and for whom? The second part of the talk will complete the answers by focusing on innovation in the Pacific Islands. The emphasis will be on fisheries and will show that the success of technological innovation depends largely on the social, cultural and economic contexts in which the innovation is diffused. The last part will deal with two important forms of innovation for the Pacific Islands: (a) Ecological intensification and (b) economic capabilities empowerment and sustainable development.
Dr Gilbert David, an island geographer and research director at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), will be speaking at the event. Dr David also participated as a keynote speaker and mentor at the first Pacific Proposal Development Training Workshop, organised by APN in collaboration with USP.
