Establishing a regional alliance for extreme precipitation observation: Coordinated capacity development and quality management of high-resolution automatic weather stations in South Asia

Short, intense rainfall events are becoming more frequent in South Asia, often triggering floods and landslides. To better tackle these devastating scenarios, multiple South Asian countries have expanded Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and rain gauge networks. However, challenges remain in maintenance, calibration, and ensuring data reliability. Without better coordination, these observations cannot fully support early warning systems or climate planning.

This project brings these countries together to improve the quality and use of sub-daily rainfall data. It will assess existing networks, identify gaps, and develop practical guidelines for station operation, maintenance, and quality control. Hands-on workshops, site visits, and knowledge exchange will train early-career researchers, technicians, and local communities. Station data will be integrated with radar, satellite, weather forecast model outputs and reanalysis products to strengthen regional monitoring of extreme rainfall.

By improving detection and estimation of extreme precipitation through coordination, sharing knowledge, and building technical capacity, the project will support early warning systems, disaster risk management, and climate risk planning in vulnerable regions. It will also lay the groundwork for a long-term regional program in high-resolution rainfall monitoring, fostering collaboration, research, and capacity development across borders.
