2. Travel Arrangement

You can arrive to Ulaanbaatar by train or air.

By train

A Train service is available from Russian Federation and China by the Trans-Mongolian Railway. An express train runs between Moscow, Ulaanbaatar and Beijing. Participants who wish to travel by train please book the train ticket by you and have receipts for reimbursement.

By air

You can arrive to Ulaanbaatar by air from Chinggis Khaan International Airport (code ULN), Mongolia and it situated 18 km to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar.

For APN funded participants

The APN will issue your travel itinerary once you have confirmed your participation. If you would like to arrange the flight by yourself, please inform the APN and local Secretariat immediately. Please consider the following if you make your own travel arrangements:

If you prefer to arrange the flight by yourself, please share the flight itinerary (clearly indicating the price) before purchasing the ticket. The secretariat will compare the price of airfare and if the fare is reasonable they will allow you to purchase the air ticket and reimburse the airfare during the workshop.

Participants must forward their flight details (flight numbers, arrival and departure times and dates) to APN Secretariat to Ms. Reiko Tamura (rtamura@apn-gcr.org) and Ms. Taniya Koswatta (tkoswatta@apn-gcr.org) as soon as possible and no later than 18 October 2015. This is a prerequisite to reserve accommodation and to organize airport transfer.

3. Visa

Based on your nationality and type of your passport you may need apply Mongolian visa before you enter to Mongolia. Please check your nationality and passport type in below table and follow the instructions.

Participants who need Mongolian visa

Nationals, who need visa to enter to Mongolia for APN events, please apply for the type A visa at Mongolian embassy in your country or nearest Mongolian Consulate General.

4. Local Transportation


Chinggis Khaan Hotel will arrange a pickup service for you to get from the Chinggis Khaan International Airport to your Hotel in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Please advise the APN Secretariat your exact arrival date and time, as well as the flight number, to confirm the reservation.

In the event that you arrive in Ulaanbaatar earlier than 30th October 2015, you can use airport taxis from the Chinggis Khaan International Airport to your Hotel in Ulaanbaatar Airport taxis are available at the outside of the airport (Maximum charge will be around 20 USD from airport to the hotel). In the case of flight time has changed from your initial confirmation that submitted to organizing committee, please call the secretariat member.


The same transfer service will be organised along the date and time of your departure. The exact departure time from the hotel will be announced to you in due course. Also, please understand that you may be asked to share your car with other delegates.

5. Accommodation

Accommodation for all participants (except who have not requested) is booked at: Chinggis Khaan Hotel. http://www.chinggis-hotel.com

6. Money

Mongolian's unit of currency is the tögrög or tugrik. Current exchange rate of USD to Mongolian tögrög is US$ 1: MNT 1973 (Rate as of 28 July 2015). US dollars are not usually accepted. Money exchange can be done at the banks and hotels.

7. Exchanging Money

It is possible to change US Dollars for Mongolian tugrik at banks, hotels and markets. There are many exchange offices can find in the center along Peace Avenue which is main shopping area of Ulaanbaatar.

8. Credit Cards

Credit cards are mostly accepted by shops in Mongolia which bear the sign of Visa and MasterCard. However most of daily transaction is done by cash and for Credit Card transaction there may charge a foreign currency conversion fee. Therefore participants are strongly recommended to have local currency for daily expenses.

9. Traveller's Cheques

Traveller's cheques, are accepted at any Bank in Mongolia most of hotels and foreign exchange counter at the airport. Banks and hotel are typically charge a fee for this service.

10. ATMs

ATMs will dispense tögrög; but also can get dollars or euros from a bank teller and maximum around US$ 500 per day (a withdrawal fee will be charged for each transaction). ATMs are generally compatible with Maestro, and VISA cards.

11. Weather

Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia. In November it characterized by very rapidly falling temperatures between 3°C to -9°C. The afternoons would be warmly pleasant and rains are not expected in winter. However, snowfall could be a possibility!

The winter weather will be very cold and therefore participants are advised to bring warm clothing. The hotel has central heating. During the day, there is plenty of sunshine but evenings can become cold rapidly.

12. Field Trip

A field trip has been arranged on 5th November 2015. It is advised that participants have warm clothing (layering would be best) and comfortable walking shoes for such programs.

13. Mobile Services

Mobicom, Unitel, G-mobile, Skytel (GSM 900) are popular cellular service providers. Pre-paid Tourist SIM cards with data service packages are available in price range from $ 10 to $ 65 at the airport.

14. Electricity

Electricity in Mongolia is 230 Volts, 50 Hertz. If you travel to Mongolia with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter. Outlets in Mongolia generally accept Type C and E plugs.

15. Cancellations

Participants who cancel their attendance at the meeting, due to unforeseeable circumstances, must notify the APN Secretariat at least SEVEN days before the planned departure date from their home country. Those who fail to notify us in advance will not be reimbursed for flights and/or will be asked to pay a cancellation fee for one-night stay at Chinggis Khaan Hotel.
