Developing life-supporting marine ecosystems along the East Asia’s coasts: A synthesis of physical and biological data regarding coral reef ecosystems for the science-based management and socio-ecological policy making in terms of global sustainability
|Project Summary||The project addresses the essential questions regarding global change research—how to identify, explain and predict the changes in the coastal marine ecosystems (particularly coral reefs) under the natural and anthropogenic influence forcing. The project team intend to unite the experience and knowledge of the scientists, management specialists and policy makers of the collaborating countries for the following main goals: 1) to synthesise the existing data on the physical environments and build the high-resolution observational databases that can contribute to filling data gaps; 2) to analyse these data together with the information on the biodiversity and reproductive potential of key groups of marine organisms for scientifically based recognition of the risky changes in the coastal coral reefs and explain their reasons; 3) to estimate the adaptive capacity and self-restoration potential of the coral reefs under global climate change. |
The project has fundamental relevance with APN as it is intended to unite both high-level and early-career scientists and managers from collaborating countries to promote regional cooperative global change research. The team plans to widely discuss and promote at public and policy-making levels all our results and conclusions for developing social-related policy options for the marine conservation and appropriate responses to global change.
