Pan-Asia Risk Reduction (PARR) Fellowship Program

Proactive approaches are needed to build more resilient and adaptive development pathways that enable integrated and strategic understanding and management of the increasing complexities arising from these challenges. New knowledge and skills must fill critical gaps that persist in the region, even given the multitude of successes of existing efforts and organizations. In addition, emerging leaders who ask questions of the status quo, think “outside the box” in addressing national, regional and global challenges, and inspire others to do the same must be nurtured. The Pan-Asia Risk Reduction (PARR) Fellowship Program offers unique research, training and educational opportunities to Asian researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to enhance their capabilities for advancing and applying knowledge on critical issues of GEC and human-environment security in the Asia-Pacific. “PARR Research Fellows” are matched with a mentor at a Host Institution where they carry out individually designed risk reduction projects while also strengthening communication skills, thus equipping them to produce, communicate and apply science that is relevant and usable across the science-policy-practice interface. “PARR Practice-Policy Fellows” are provided with a mixed experience of intensive training, interactions with a Policy Partner, and implementation of a risk reduction project that is integrated into the their everyday work. All PARR participants and their institutions are involved in periodic integrative activities that promote additional skill-building and the development a cohesive network of people capable of confronting the challenges of GEC and human-environment security through risk management. The PARR program will provide Fellowships for scientific capacity development on the topic of urban disaster risk and vulnerability under global environmental change.
