IMBER ClimEco4 Summer School – Delineating the Issues of Climate Change and Impacts to Marine Ecosystems: Bridging the Gap between Research, Assessment, Policy and Management

ClimEco4 is an international summer school organised by the Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research (IMBER) project. It will be held at the East China Normal University in Shanghai, China from 4-9 August 2014. The title of the summer school is “Delineating the Issues of Climate Change and Impacts to Marine Ecosystems: Bridging the Gap Between Research, Assessment, Policy and Management”. ClimEco4 will focus on indicators for evaluating marine ecosystems, with particular attention given to their definition, construction, use, and combination to inform policy and decision-making. Lectures will include a climate change primer, general information on databases (acquiring and managing large data sets), data analysis methods for indicators (statistical methods), using indicators with models (ecosystem, socio-economic models), and criteria and use of indicators for informing marine management and policy. There will be daily “hands-on” sessions with example databases, indices, and models to enable the participants to apply the concepts covered in the lectures. ClimEco4 aims to contribute to developing a community of inter-disciplinary marine researchers who can work at the interface of natural and human systems. The multi-disciplinary lectures will discuss indices of climate change, climate impacts and marine ecosystem services, and their links to socio-economic indices and policy information related to climate-ecosystem interactions. There are ten lecturers and about 60 participants have been selected to attend. All participants are expected to bring a poster of their current work or research interests that they will present during a poster session. The posters will be judged and feedback provided.
