The first section provides the background and rationale for the book; definitions of the region and the coast; and the state of the coastal environment focusing on current issues such as coastal erosion, sea-level rise, vulnerability of small islands, and pollution. The second and main section of the book, consists of nine chapters which focus on current research findings, address different global change coastal issues, and identify and discuss new directions for global change research related to coastal management. The authors for these chapters are an international mix of scientists selected for their coastal expertise in the Asia-Pacific region. These authors come from a wide range of countries including Australia, Canada, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
