The Capacity Building for Drought Monitoring and Studying in Monsoon Asia Under the Framework of Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI)

Through this APN project, project team has set up the “AWCI drought monitoring and research working group,” which includes scientists from 10 countries in Asia, and built the scientific support team to provide advice on retrieval of remote sensing data and ground validation. Project team has collected the ground observation data related to drought monitoring from Mongolia, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Viet Nam. And AMSR-E soil moisture products (from JAXA and NASA) are provided to the group members for ground validation and drought index studies. To finish the research targets of this project, the project team has hosted 5 drought work group meetings and 1 training workshop from 2008 to 2010. The meetings and trainings conducted from 2008-2010 are as follows: 1) The 1st drought group workshop was held from 6-8 November 2008 in Beijing, jointly with AWCI/GEOSS meeting. The Drought working group and scientific support team were established in 2008. 2) The 2nd drought working group meeting was held in February 2009 in Kyoto, Japan, in conjuction with AWCI/GEOSS workshop. 3) The 3rd drought group meeting took place in 15-16 May 2009 in Bangkok, hosted by START-Southeast Asia Regional Center. There were about 20 participants who joined the workshop. 4) The 4th drought group meeting was held from 1-3 October 2009 in Chiang Mai, Thailand and hosted by the Chiang Mai University. There were about 15 scientists who joined this meeting. 5) The 5th drought group meeting was held from 15-16 December 2009 at the University of Tokyo which was conducted jointly with the AWCI/GEOSS meeting.
