Impacts of Global Change on the Dynamics of Snow, Glaciers and Runoff over the Himalayan Mountains and Their Consequences for Highland and Downstream Regions

Due to ruggedness of the Himalayan terrain and inaccessibility of its higher regions, there is however a great paucity of adequate scientific data leading to uncertainty and knowledge gap in understanding and projecting such hydrological changes. In this first year, high resolution regional climate model is being run, validated and then used together with energy budget model for understanding snow and glaciers dynamics and for projecting changes in the melt runoff in three selected Himalayan river basins. Similarly hydrological models are being validated to use for assessing temporal and spatial change in water availability in the selected basins. In the second year of this two-year project, apart from fine tuning of the models, a desk study will be conducted on the consequences of such changes in water availability to people’s livelihood and economy and societies in the highlands and the downstream area. The project would thus provide much needed science-based information for identifying and implementing adaptation and mitigation strategies for the sustainable development of the regions.
