A talk by Dr. Fredolin Tangang at Andalas University, Padang Indonesia on Key Issues on Climate Change Opportunities for International Grants

On an invitation from Professor Marzuki, Head of the Institute of Research and Community Service at Universitas Andalas (Andalas University), Dr. Fredolin Tangang, an APN SPG Expert member, delivered a talk on February 21st, 2024, on key issues related to climate change and opportunities for international research grants at its main campus in Padang, West Sumatra.

APN talk at the Andalas University

Andalas University is a public research institution and one of the largest universities in West Sumatra, with a student population of more than 30,000. The talk was attended by around 20 participants, including heads of departments and leaders of research groups. Although the presentation primarily focused on key issues related to climate change based on the key findings of the IPCC AR6 Report, it also addressed climate projections over Indonesia based on CORDEX Southeast Asia, a project funded by the APN. According to these projections, Indonesia, especially Sumatra, is considered to be highly exposed to the impacts of future climate change and climate variability.

Opportunities for APN CRRP and CAPaBLE, especially for themes related to climate change and climate variability, were also presented based on slides and information provided by the APN team. It is noteworthy that during the discussion session, many research ideas were proposed by the participants to address climate change issues in Sumatra, which could be highly relevant to APN in future calls.

At the end of the session, Professor Marzuki assured participants that a coordinated effort would be made to ensure some of the ideas could be translated into research proposals, either as CRRP or CAPABLE projects, for the next round of APN calls expected in November 2024.

About APN Core activities

Regional research

Through the competitive Collaborative Regional Research Programme (CRRP), we promote regional research that has potential to improve our understanding of global change and its implications while contributing to a sound scientific basis for policymaking in areas affected by global change.

Examples of CRRP activities fall under the following categories:

  1. Collaborative research on global change and sustainability that, particularly, addresses gaps, analysis, synthesis and assessment.
  2. Collaborative research that develops pathways and mechanisms to achieve progress towards global change and sustainable development and develop adaptation strategies.
  3. Collaborative place-based integrative research, particularly from developing countries.
  4. Collaborative research that is co-designed with stakeholders (non-academic) and has actionable outcomes.

Capacity development

CAPaBLE, our scientific capacity development programme, aims to enhance the capacity of scientists, policymakers and practitioners to assess global change issues, and explore options to resolve issues towards achieving sustainability. Through CAPaBLE, we support activities that enhance capacity at individual, organizational and systemic levels.

Through CAPaBLE, we support activities that enhance capacity at individual, organizational and systemic levels.

  1. Capacity development activities that promote the following approaches related to one or more of the five thematic areas of APN:
    • Utilizing and strengthening existing capacity
    • Creating opportunities to use/instil capacity
    • Developing new capacity through innovative approaches
  2. Awareness-raising and dissemination activities for policy- and decision-making communities, civil society and/or the general public.
  3. Science-policy interfacing in the context of the five thematic areas and priority topics.
  4. Capacity development partnership activities that contribute to the capacity development components of the evolving global change arena, including the UNFCCC Paris Agreement, IPCC, IPBES, post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the UN Decade of Ocean Science as well as ongoing and new global change and sustainability research programmes.
  5. Activities geared towards using science communication as a way to disseminate knowledge generated from projects, particularly to non-science audiences.
