Brief introduction and background:
This project aims to draw on past and current research efforts on emissions
and urban management, and establish a new set of coordinated case studies that
will address how carbon management can be integrated into development strategies
for cities. Two meetings are planned:
- The first meeting is to agree upon the datasets and protocols
for analysis ; and
- The second meeting is to synthesize the preliminary
analyses of the case studies.
Although the support from the APN is targeted directly at establishing an
initial network of case studies in the Asia-Pacific region, it is the intention
at the outset that this project will be linked with other related initiatives
around the world to create a global project. The case studies will, therefore,
contribute directly to new initiatives on human settlements and regional patterns
of development in the international Global Change Science Programmes, including
the joint Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP) Global Carbon Project and
the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) initiative on urbanization,
among other programmes.
Outline of activities conducted:
In the first year of this two-year project the following activities were conducted:
- Drafting of a Protocol for the Urbanization and Carbon Project
Workshop, 25-27 September 2003, Manila , Philippines;
- Finalization of Research
Protocol; and
- Drafting of a Terms of Reference (TOR): Case and Synthesis Study Proposals.
Outcomes and products:
Outcomes and products to date include:
- A Research Protocol for the APN-funded project on Integrating
Carbon Management into the Development Strategies of Cities - Establishing
a Network of Case Studies of Urbanization in the Asia-Pacific; and
- A number of Case Study Proposals (Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh City,
Jakarta, Metro Manila, New Delhi).
Future directions and follow-up work:
The future directions and follow-up work into the second year of this project,
which at the time of writing this report is subject to APN approval, will focus
on the following activities:
- The writing of Case Study Working Papers that will
examine datasets and include a review of the literature (Jan-Sep 2004);
- The writing of Synthesis Working Papers that will focus
on a conceptual, general review (Jan-Nov 2004);
- The undertaking of a Web Conference that will bring
the case study teams together (May 2004); and
- The holding of a Synthesis
Meeting (October 2004).
