Introduction/Background
The primary goal of the project is to determine if data of sufficient
quality for the study of climate change and water resources could be obtained
for a set of Asia Pacific Cities. These cities, selected through two workshops
convened by APN include: Kobe, Tianjin, Suva, Singapore, Karachi and Kuala
Lumpur. A secondary goal is to undertake some preliminary analysis of partial
data to obtain some sense of what might be learned should the requisite
data actually be obtained.
Outline of activities conducted
- For Kobe, the work is completed. Excellent data with the required
characteristics are available.
- For Tianjin, our local collaborator has not been active, and no work
has apparently been done. We have given up on the site but are actively
exploring other potential sites in China.
- For Suva, the work is nearly completed. However, the data are uneven
and water use data have been difficult to obtain.
- For Singapore, excellent data have very recently been provided. It
is not clear that there will sufficient time to analyse these data.
- For Karachi, after an initial flurry of activity, there was a very
long period of silence. The activity apparently resumed in early January.
Whether data will ever be delivered, or delivered before the grant ends,
is an open question.
- For Kuala Lumpur, after some initial activity, the work seems to
have ceased. We have been unable to obtain any additional information.
In response to apparent failures at several sites, Canberra has been added
to the project. The work there is in progress.
Outcomes/Products
Most of the preliminary data analyses to date have concentrated on
the data from Kobe because these data are currently the most complete.
Preliminary results were presented as the IGES/APN Mega-city workshop held
in Kitakyushu, Japan, in January.
Future directions/Follow-up work
With a second year of funding, we would:
1. Collect data in three new sites
2. Analyse all of the data collected, and
3. Write a proposal for a full-scale research effort on
climate change and water resources in perhaps a dozen sites. The PI has
been strongly encouraged by US NSF to submit such a proposal.
