VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT for Theme Leaders on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security
The CGIAR Challenge Program on "Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security" is a major collaborative endeavour between the international agricultural (CGIAR) and global environmental change (ESSP) research communities (www.essp.org/index.php?id=76 ).

Research will be aimed at overcoming the threats posed by a changing climate to achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods and improving environmental management in the developing world.
The program seeks Theme Leaders for the following six Themes:

1: Diagnosing vulnerability and analysing opportunities
2: Unlocking the potential of macro-level policies
3: Enhancing engagement and communication for decision-making
4: Adaptation pathways based on managing current climate risk
5: Adaptation pathways under progressive climate change
6: Poverty alleviation through climate change mitigation

Theme Leaders can be appointed on a part-time or full-time basis for a three year renewable term, and in general will remain attached to their home institution. Each will be assisted by a full time science officer. Theme Leaders are expected to show inspired scientific leadership and would be responsible for developing and implementing the Theme research.

Major new collaborative opportunity for GEC researchers
The new CGIAR Challenge Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) is now being launched. CCAFS has been jointly developed by the GEC community (under the auspices of ESSP) and the CGIAR, and offers an unprecedented opportunity for GEC researchers to engage in collaborative work on this very important topic. Substantial funding for this 10-year project is anticipated.

The Global Land Project Nodal Offices in Beijing, China and Sapporo, Japa, with support from the APN, will co-organise a Workshop on Vulnerability and Resilience of Land Systems in Asia in Beijing on 15-17 June 2009. PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change/ Call for Applications 2009/2010. Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), launched a 3-year PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change, organised in two Streams: Dynamic Climatology at CMCC in Bologna; and Climate Change Impact and Management, at the Department of Economics of the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. There are 6 places in total with 3 scholarships - funded by CMCC - available for the successful candidates. The deadline for the applications is 23rd June 2009. PAGES seeks nominations for new Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) members before 1 JUNE 2009.The SSC provides guidance for the PAGES project as a whole and oversees major scientific activities. In this round, PAGES is particularly interested in scientists from the Southern Hemisphere, and those who will actively work to drive forward the recently completed Science Plan and Implementation Strategy (http://www.pages-igbp.org/science/).

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is issuing a Call for Proposals (CFP) on “Earth Observations in Decision Support Projects. This CFP seeks to identify and promote practical applications of Earth observations to improve decision making. The due date for the submission of initial Concept Proposals is on 4 June 2009 and the due date for submitting Full Proposals is on 10 November 2009.

The Scientific Steering Committee of the Global Land Project (GLP) has recently granted Ecosystem Services Management in Asia (ECOSMAG) an endorsed project status. ECOSMAG is a project principally funded by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) to improve our understanding of the impacts of land management on ecosystem services provided by upper tributary watersheds. The book "Climate Change in Asia: Perspectives on the Future Climate Change Regime" edited by Yasuko Kameyama, Agus Sari, Moekti Soejachmoen and Norichika Kanie has just been released by the United Nations University Press. This book is a result of a two-year research project - Issues Related to Future Actions on Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific, which was funded by the APN in 2005 and 2006.
