| Summary of Project |
The project will be structured around four activities: 1) scope possible sources of historical data and information on Pacific Islands coastal environments; 2) prepare digital versions of a selection of the datasets and build a pilot data repository; 3) hold a regional workshop on the potential value and application of the data to better understand the effects of climate change and other processes, both human and environmental, on coastal environments. The workshop will form part of the 2008 SOPAC Annual Session to allow broad participation from scientists and government representatives from Pacific Island countries; and 4) prepare a follow-on proposal to make use of historical imagery for understanding the effects of climate change and other factors on coastal communities in the Pacific Islands. All activities are necessary in order to build knowledge of where the data are held, how it can be accessed, how it can be best distributed within the region, and how it can be used to inform national governments in formulating policy in relation to adaptation and mitigation strategies. |
