| Summary of Project |
Agriculture and the conversion of the forest to agriculture land are the leading sources of greenhouse gas production, in addition to combustion of fossil fuels. Tree planting and the return of more carbon to the soil are the only feasible means of removing large quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere. Meanwhile, introducing locally appropriate land-use change, and linking these to the rapidly growing external carbon financial markets, will create the necessary conditions for poverty reduction and greenhouse gas mitigation. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol offers one opportunity by which biologically sequestered carbons can be sold. This project aims to link community-based reforestation projects to the financial incentives of the emerging global carbon markets, which will ensure sustainability. The expected project outcomes include a carbon accounting training manual with information specific to carbon financial markets (Chicago Climate Exchange and CDM) and baseline mapping of land cover and carbon for 1999/2000 and 2005/2006 for the target communities in the countries involved. |
