The El Nino Southern Oscillation has major environmental and economic impacts on both sides of the Pacific. ENSO events can cause significant drought or floods over Australia as well as some other regional countries Australian scientists have developed oceanic models that simulate ENSO under today s conditions and under higher levels of greenhouse gases. The models suggest that increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere could cause ENSO events to occur in our region more frequently - as often as every three years, instead of the current average of every five years. We are continuing our research to develop a better understanding of possible interactions between the enhanced greenhouse effect and ENSO events A very high proportion of our population, and our economic production, is centered around coastal areas. Some of these areas may be vulnerable to sea level rise, and, in the north of the country, to tropical cyclones. Studies to date suggest that tropical cyclone intensities will increase moderately in Queensland in future decades. Increases in tropical cyclone intensities together with rising sea level are likely to increase typical storm surge heights. Cyclones are already devastating in some areas - the implications of these predictions are very serious for settlements on coastal areas. Australian scientists are in the forefront of tropical cyclone research. Some of Australia s expertise and infrastructure will be discussed in more detail today.
