New Book: Groundwater Environment in Asian Cities

18 March 2016, Bangkok, Thailand — A book on “Groundwater Environment in Asian Cities” by Associate Professor Dr. Sangam Shrestha and Vishnu Prasad Pandey of the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has been released by Elsevier. The book is coauthored with Binaya R Shivakoti of Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan and Shashidhar Thatikonda of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad, and focuses on groundwater environment in 14 Asian cities.

The first section of the book comprising of two chapters contextualises the study and presents the analytical framework. The remaining three sections are a detailed study of the Groundwater Environment in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central and East Asia. The 19-chapter book targets policy makers, decision makers, researchers, academic and research institutes, implementing agencies and governmental bodies working in the groundwater sector.

According to the authors, “The information in the book will serve as a baseline for other research such as mitigation of groundwater related problems (e.g., land subsidence), the impact of climate change on groundwater, and the importance of groundwater for implementing sustainable development goals in future.”

The book was conceived as a result of feedback from the APN-funded project titled “Enhancing Groundwater Management Capacity in Asian Cities through Development and Application of Groundwater Sustainability Index in the Context of Climate Change”. (CBA2013-06NSY-Shrestha)
