Twelveth Asiaflux Worshop Promotes Flux Monitoring for a Sustainable Future

Asiaflux Workshop 2014, jointly supported by the APN (through ARCP2014-04CMY-Miyata), Campbell Scientific and the National Institute for Agro-Environmental Science (NIAES) of Japan, was held on 18–23 August at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines.

With the theme “Bridging atmospheric flux monitoring and national and international climate change initiatives,” short training courses, workshops and plenary sessions in Asiaflux 2014 brought together scientists, researchers, academicians and entrepreneurs in Asia to discuss and share knowledge in ensuring sustainability of life on earth through flux monitoring.

Amongst the focused topics in discussion and poster sessions were: (1) Up-to-date techniques and understanding for trace gas and methane fluxes; (2) Carbon and water cycles in tropical and subtropical Asian ecosystems in changing environment; (3) Impacts of extreme climate and disturbances on carbon, water and material cycles in terrestrial ecosystems under monsoon climate; (4) Model-data integrative analysis towards better understanding of terrestrial carbon budget in Asia; (5) Linking flux monitoring to climate change initiatives in agro-ecosystem; and (6) Soil-plant-atmosphere interactions: mechanisms, responses and approaches for understanding the Asian terrestrial carbon cycle.

Dr. Akira Miyata, Leader of the APN project and Chair of Asiaflux and Director of the Agro-Meteorology Division of NIAES, cited that the Asiaflux community works on monitoring greenhouse gases (GHG) that contribute to global warming. Aiming to bring key ecosystems under observation ensuring sustainability and quality of life in Asia, AsiaFlux provide tools and information to assess GHG and climate change mitigation programs among the science community.
