DRI Disaster Prevention Seminar, Lasse Hall, Kobe City Chuo Ward, Hyogo, Japan;14 October 2009

The APN Secretariat, in collaboration with the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation and the Hyogo Prefectural Government, conducted a “DRI Disaster Prevention Seminar” at the Lasse Hall, Kobe City Chuo Ward, Hyogo, Japan on 14 October 2009. It was attended by more than 200 participants.

Worth noting is the opening remarks given by the Governor of the Hyogo Prefecture, Mr. Toshizo IDO. He said that in January 2010, it will be 15 years since the great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake occurred. It is therefore very important that people are prepared in case a similar disaster happens in the future. He also mentioned about the drastic increase in the intensity of rainfall caused by climate change and ended his talk by recognising the relevance of the theme which is focused on climate change and disaster prevention.

APN also coordinated the participation of Prof. Hiromune Yokoki in the Seminar. He gave a talk on “Influence and Measures against the Coastal Disaster of the Climatic Change”. He is an Associate Professor from Ibaraki University, Center for Water Environmental Studies Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science. The Institute’s Director is Prof. Nobuo Mimura, the APN’s Scientific Planning Group (SPG) Member for Japan. In his presentation, Prof. Yokoki explained the factors that caused global warming and analyses of the next state based on the current climatic trend. He also discussed the importance of forecasting and how it will strengthen the sustainability of the human society.
